Start Your Day With Water

It’s the start of a new year and for many, this means New Year’s resolutions. Creating a new daily habit can be an easy way to make a lasting change.  Here’s one simple daily habit you can do to improve your health:  Drink 16 oz of water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Your body will naturally lose fluids through respiration and perspiration as you sleep.   Since the body cannot function optimally without an adequate supply of water, it is important to replace lost fluids at the start of each day.  After your body has gone for 7 or more hours without water, the best thing you can do is replenish those lost fluids by drinking a glass of water as soon as you get up.   I like to keep a refillable water bottle on my night table, so I can start rehydrating as soon as my feet hit the floor in the morning.  I usually try to drink about a cup (8 oz) of water right away and then another cup (8 oz) while I’m preparing my breakfast.  While thirst is a sign that your body needs more water, by the time you feel thirsty, you are usually dehydrated.

Drinking water on an empty stomach has many health benefits.

1. Helps to Expel Toxins

At night, your body repairs itself and casts out toxins in the body. When you drink water on an empty stomach in the morning, you help to flush out these harmful toxins.

2. Keeps Your Bowels Moving

Drinking water on an empty stomach helps to get the bowels moving and helps to prevent haemorrhoids, constipation and even colon cancer.

3. Keeps your internal organs healthy

Water keeps your body hydrated which is really important for the proper functioning of all your internal organs such as your brain, heart, lungs, liver and kidneys.  Your brain cells, for example, are made up of 80% water!  Starting your day with a glass of water can help you to feel alert and focused.

 4. Strengthens Your Immune System

Drinking water on an empty stomach helps in flushing and balancing the lymphatic system, which leads to increased levels of immunity. A strong immune system will keep you better protected against germs and illness.

5. Keeps Your Skin Healthy

Drinking water on an empty stomach increases blood flow throughout the skin, which helps keep your skin hydrated, smooth, clear and healthy.

6.  Gives You an Energy Boost

Drinking water immediately after waking up hydrates your red blood cells and sends oxygen to all your body tissues.  It’s like giving yourself a “jumpstart.”  In addition, starting your day with water purifies your colon, making it easier to absorb all the energizing nutrients from your healthy breakfast.

There are a whole host of benefits of drinking water immediately after waking up. It’s without a doubt, an easy way to make a positive change to your health. Give it a try!
