If anyone is curious about visiting Float Mississauga or a float spa in your area, I highly encourage you to give it a try. You may have heard me mention the benefits of supplementing with magnesium or taking an epsom salt bath before, but this “float” experience takes it to the next level.
First, let’s review the benefits of epsom salt. Epsom salt is not actually salt but a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfur. These two minerals are readily absorbed through the skin, so soaking in Epsom salts provides a transdermal intake of these nutrients.
Magnesium is a crucial mineral to the body, playing a role in reducing inflammation, helping muscle and nerve function and regulating the activity of over 300 enzymes. It is also known as the “anti-stress” mineral due to the significant role it plays in helping both smooth and skeletal muscles to relax. And given the depleted state of our soil, it is a mineral that many people are deficient in.
Sulfates are essential for the optimal health of joints, skin, and nervous tissue. When absorbed through the skin, sulfates can promote the health of these tissues. Sulfates also bind toxic impurities in the liver to render them less hazardous. Specifically, the sulfur component of sulfate salts is what binds to toxins, ensuring their elimination from the body. Once the fat-soluble toxins stored in the liver tissue become metabolized, they are water soluble and can be effectively excreted as waste in the urine.
At Float Mississauge, the water is completely recirculated 3 to 5 times between each float through an intense filtration system, and then treated with a combination of a germicidal UV lamp, ozone and hydrogen peroxide. The pod itself is large enough to comfortably float on your back. I had enough room to do a star fish float. The Toronto Argonauts are frequent visitors to Float Missisauga, so if large offensive linemen can fit, so can you! The water is a comfortable “skin temperature,” neither too warm or too cool. The depth of the water is quite shallow, below knee level.
Each float pod has close to 1,000 pounds of epsom salts to create a zero gravity simulation. It is impossible to sink. In fact, I tried pushing my leg down to completely submerge my sore knee, and it was very difficult to keep it under the water. So, even if you are a non-swimmer and can’t float in a pool or lake, you will be able to float without any effort at all in the float pod. The epsom salt solution will do all the work for you.
Each pod is contained in its own private room with a rainforest shower. If you are concerned about feeling claustrophobic once inside the pod, relax. There is no right or wrong way to experience the float pod. There is no rule that says you must close the lid. If you feel more comfortable leaving the pod lid partially or even completely open, go right ahead. If you want to experience a more enclosed, cocoon-like feeling, then close the lid and leave the lights inside the pod on. Want to try the full sensory deprivation experience? Close the lid and then press the light button inside the pod for complete darkness.
I really enjoyed my experience at Float Mississauga. The idea of “letting go” and allowing my mind and body to completely relax took a bit of time. By the end of my hour long float, I felt myself becoming completely relaxed. I opted to try the full sensory deprivation experience, and I emerged from the pod feeling very calm and relaxed. Actually, I’m pretty sure if I had been in there much longer, I would have drifted off to sleep!
As a nutritionist, I’m always looking for ways to help my clients reach their health goals. I wanted to try “floating” to see if it might be something I would recommend and I’m happy to say that it is. With our fast paced society, with smart phones and technology around every corner, it’s hard to avoid an overload of external stimuli. Inside the pods, where all sound, light, and stimulation is removed, your brain is better able to slow down and process thoughts effortlessly. The effects after a float will be a clear mind and increased relaxation. The epsom salt solution allows your central nervous system to reduce its workload and therefore gives your body the opportunity to completely relax.
For anyone looking to de-stress, reduce anxiety or lower blood pressure, “floating” may be something to consider. Muscle aches and pains? Being in a zero-gravity environment allows your body to feel weightless therefore muscles and joints start to completely relax and your body is better able to heal and repair itself. Difficulty sleeping? A relaxing float in the evening might help. Give it a try, you might just love it as much as I did!
