Oats: Oats are a great source of soluble fibre and studies have shown that oats help remove cholesterol from the digestive system that would otherwise end up in the bloodstream. Oats help to lower cholesterol levels which translates to reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. *For a gluten free recipe, use certified gluten free rolled oats.
Cinnamon: Cinnamon is a popular spice amongst diabetics as it helps to stabilize blood sugar levels. Cinnamon contains anti-inflammatory properties as well as anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties. Cinnamon is an excellent source of manganese and fibre and a very good source of calcium.
Chocolate Protein Powder: Protein powder supplies a complete protein blend of amino acids. Protein helps to facilitate proper muscle function which is important in sustaining an active lifestyle. *For a vegan recipe, use a plant based protein powder.
Cacao Nibs: You can find this mighty super food at your local health food store or Whole Foods. Cacao nibs are a healthier option to adding chocolate chips and they contain more health benefits than dark chocolate. They are a good source of magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, manganese and potassium. They also help to release serotonin, which is a hormone that promotes feelings of well-being.
